The Plague of Indifference

The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference.
The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference.
And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.

Elie Wiesel

The Plague of Indifference

If you don’t live a completely sheltered life, you have probably heard of, read about or had someone make allusions to the plagues of the bible. Locusts, frogs, diseases, water turning to blood, obvious visual cues infesting the land. Or perhaps, you have heard of ‘The Black Plague”? The most terrible pandemic in history. It made your lymph nodes swell up and your skin would blacken due bleeding beneath the skin and the extremities would darken with gangrene. Another great visual, eh?

What about now in this time, this moment. To me, the most terrible plague today, the most harmful and most tragic pandemic to sweep the earth right this very second? Something that is invisible, quite deadly and produces no spectacular visual anomalies…Indifference. It is the worst kind of plague that consumes humanity. There seems to be an increasing number of ambivalent people that are consumed by their daily narcissistic ways. People that trudge through life doing the bare minimum, doing the least they can do to get by. We have metamorphosed into “the whatever” generation. An apathetic catch phrase used to punctuate a great travesty to humanity.

Indifference is the strongest force in the universe.
It makes everything it touches meaningless. Love and hate don't stand a chance against it.

The Snow Queen

What makes love and hate pale in comparison to indifference? With love and hate, at least there is a connection to something outside yourself. You are actually stepping outside your own realm of realism and making an investment in something or someone else. There is a lack of passion that envelopes indifference. The lack of passion leaves a person empty, hollow. Indifference is the father of avoidance and mother of cynicism (thanks Gunther) , the lack of personal involvement, the lack of caring. So many people just don’t care, about anything except themselves and a lot of times the most indifferent people don’t even attempt to care about themselves either. With no sense of personal investment there leaves no room for compassion and grace, loves catalysts.

Indifference is the grey area between emotions. Its neither love, nor hate, black nor white. It identifies with nothing and stands by, self consumed and unaware. Indifference requires nothing from you, therefore you think you cannot fail because you are attempting nothing. But in fact, you are failing humanity and yourself at an incredible cost. Be aware of yourself, your actions and more importantly, your lack of action and concern. Don’t stay silent in the face of injustice. Speak! Become passionate, but don’t disconnect, don’t be a carrier of the great plague of the century.

Desire is half of life; indifference is half of death.”
Kahlil Gibran
